What to expect from an Osteopathic Consultation
Allow up to one hour for an initial consultation. We recommend wearing comfortable loose clothing. The initial consultation will include taking a case history to make sure that you are safe to treat. After that any appropriate diagnostic tests and a movement- based examination will be carried out and if clinically appropriate, thereafter an osteopathic treatment will follow. Appropriate exercises and advice for each individual patient will often be part of an initial consultation with an aim to be incorporated into a treatment plan.
ACC Treatment
We are an accredited ACC treatment provider.
What is involved in Osteopathic treatment?
Osteopathic treatment involves a hands-on approach to diagnose and treat illness or injury by focusing on musculoskeletal and physiological health. Osteopaths use a variety of techniques to address pain and dysfunction in the body, aiming to restore normal function and reduce pain. These techniques can include soft tissues muscle techniques, joint mobilisation, and spinal manipulation. Osteopaths will select appropriate techniques based on the individual patient and their case history. One of the core fundamental principles of Osteopathy is that Structure Governs Function. If Musculo-skeletal, vascular, neurological and visceral (body organs) elements are happy then the body will feel balanced (Homeostasis).
Post Treatment
After treatment the body will be responding to the work that has been done and similarly to when we have a cold, the body will work harder and use its resources more intensely to react to changes in the body. As a result, some people may feel tired, stiff or sore for 24-48hrs after treatment. This is quite normal. It is advised to rest on the day of treatment and to keep well hydrated and rest to assist the body in reacting to the extra demands placed upon it and to maximise the benefit of treatment.
